  4. Accelerating the screening process, experts recommend approval
  5. for DDC

  8.     The continuing ravages of AIDS have forced the U.S. Food and
  9. Drug Administration to further streamline drug-approval
  10. procedures. Last week a panel of experts recommended that the
  11. government agency give its conditional blessing to
  12. dideoxycytidine, or DDC. Although preliminary studies indicate
  13. that this antiviral medication may not work as well as AZT which
  14. still ranks as the premier AIDS treatment, the combination of
  15. drugs seems to rejuvenate some of the immune cells that are
  16. normally destroyed during the course of the disease.

  18.     If the FDA approves DDC the manufacturer, Hoffmann-La
  19. Roche, will be required to submit further studies on the drug's
  20. safety and efficacy.
